Manufacturing software rarely gets to start clean. There is an ERP nobody wants to replace, machines that predate the internet, and a shop floor where a touchscreen has to work with gloves on.

The office system and the floor reality

Production is planned in one system and actually run from a printed sheet with handwritten corrections. Stock levels are accurate on the first of the month and drift from there. When something goes wrong nobody can reconstruct which batch, which machine or which shift, because the record of what really happened never made it off paper.

What makes this sector hard

You integrate with the ERP, you do not replace it

Replacing a working ERP is a multi-year programme with a poor success rate. The pragmatic path is to build the missing capability around it and integrate, treating the ERP as the system of record for the things it already handles well. We scope to that unless there is a strong reason not to.

The interface is used with gloves, in noise, standing up

Shop-floor input is not desk software. Large touch targets, minimal typing, barcode and scanner input over keyboards, and readable at arm's length under bad lighting. An interface designed on a laptop will fail on the floor.

Traceability is a legal requirement, not a feature

For regulated or exported goods you need to reconstruct which materials went into which batch, and when. That has to be captured as it happens rather than reconciled later, which shapes the data model and means changes to historical records must be append-only.

FAQ

It depends on what they expose. Modern equipment often speaks OPC UA or MQTT and is straightforward. Older machines may offer a serial output or nothing at all, in which case the options are a retrofit sensor or manual capture at the terminal. We establish which before quoting, because the answer changes the project.

Rarely, and we would usually advise against it. Off-the-shelf ERP handles accounting and procurement better than a custom build will. Where custom work pays off is the part of your process the ERP does not model, built to sit alongside it.
